Hayward
Regional Shoreline

General Information

Hayward Regional Shoreline is part of the East Bay Regional Park system and the Bay Trail. The primary purpose of this park is to increase the number of salt marshes in the Bay Area.

Fishing Information

My first visit to this park was in the late summer of 1997. I had just stopped by to scope out the area for a future fishing trip, when I managed to hear about a school of stripers that had pushed bait into Cogswell Marsh and were feeding quite voraciously. I quickly returned to my pickup for tackle, and managed to catch three small stripers in the half-hour before the gate was to close.

The most popular fishing area here is found by following the path that leads directly west from the parking lot, next to a small slough. Small stripers will occasionally gather in front of the drainage culvert during a high outgoing tide. A large Rattle Trap fished perpendicularly can sometimes entice them to bite. An alternate choice is to bait fish for leopard sharks and bat rays off the point called Hayward Landing.

I normally try and fish this area at high tide. But in taking the pictures for this web site, I discovered that at low tide, a nice finger of land extends out into the bay. It may be worth a try.

Directions
