Alameda Rockwall
General Information
The Encinal Launching and Fishing
Facility, otherwise known as the Alameda Rockwall, is located on the northwestern part of
Alameda Island. Parking is plentiful, and flush toilets are available. The gate to the
parking area is open from two hours before sunrise, until two hours after sunset. A cement
cap extends several hundred feet along the pathway, ending at a fence that separates the
park from the shipyard.
Fishing Information
The Rockwall has developed quite a
reputation as an excellent place to catch fish, particularly sturgeon. Every winter,
numerous diamondbacks are landed here, and the pictures proudly displayed at several
nearby bait and tackle shops.
Sturgeon fishing is really pretty simple.
Use a sliding sinker rig with either a nylon-encased wire sturgeon leader, or one made of heavy (at least 30lb) nylon monofilament.
The reason being, that when a sturgeon is hooked, it may start to roll. Since it's sides are very abrasive, a lighter leader is prone to breakage.
Bait up with the bait-of-the-day (see Grand St. B&T) and you'll all set.
During the spring and summer, the focus shifts to jacksmelt,
stripers, halibut, rays and sharks. With jacksmelt being the most consistent catch. Use a
small piece of pile worm under a bobber for the jacksmelt. A live shiner on a sliding
sinker rig works well the halibut.

Rockwall can be somewhat of a chore. If traveling north on I880, take the Broadway exit,
and head east one block to 7th. Turn right two blocks to Webster St. Then follow Webster St.
through the tunnel to Central Ave.. Turn right on Central Ave., and look for an unmarked
entrance between two fences just past Lincoln St. Its located right next to Encinal High School.
